Director of Major and Planned Giving

DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital, one of the premier veterinary hospitals in the country, is hiring a Director of Major and Planned Giving to join our leadership team!

As the Director of Major and Planned Giving, you are a seasoned, strategic, and successful fundraising professional who will position DoveLewis as the leading philanthropic destination for individuals seeking to make large-scale investments in animal health and veterinary medicine in the Pacific Northwest. You will be a leader within the Development Team and will oversee the expansion of individual giving programs to significantly increase funding for charity care, endowments, capital, education, and animal health services. You and your team will focus on increasing giving levels among existing donors and creating a new pool of potential donors in collaboration with the Board of Directors, Executive team, and Development staff to achieve ambitious revenue goals for major and estate gifts. You will also manage and coach a small team of fundraisers.

This position is located onsite in Portland, Oregon and may require attending meetings and functions during evenings and weekends periodically.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in fundraising, with at least five years of experience personally soliciting six figure + and estate gifts.
• Minimum of three years managing and mentoring development professionals.
• Local affiliations and ties with philanthropic community highly preferred.
• Preferred experience in higher education, veterinary medicine, or health care.
• Experience using donor database software (Raiser’s Edge NXT preferred).
• Proven track record of achieving revenue targets.
• Deep knowledge of development best practices and working knowledge of state and federal laws related to charitable giving.
• Strategic mindset with an ability to think and focus on both the near- and long-term.
• Understanding of a variety of giving vehicles and assets utilized in major and estate gifts.
• Exceptional active listening and presentation skills, and ability to speak in public.
• Strong writing and editing skills.
• Ability to and comfort with engaging high-net-worth individuals, senior leadership, and allied professionals (attorneys, CPAs, wealth managers) in charitable giving conversations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and develop trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated success coaching the next generation of development professionals.
• Any suitable combination of experience or education may substitute.
