Primary Purpose
The Director of Student Academic Support Services at the University of the Pacific plays a pivotal role in advancing the university’s commitment to student success. This position is primarily responsible for overseeing and enhancing a comprehensive suite of student support services, including but not limited to tutoring, writing assistance, academic skills instruction, and English Language Learner ( ELL ) programs. The Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Student Success Hub in the library, strategically aligning these services with the university’s broader mission of providing a transformative and inclusive educational experience.
Essential Functions
Provide strategic leadership in overseeing and enhancing tutoring services, writing assistance, academic skills instruction, and ELL programs to align with the university’s commitment to student success. Lead and supervise staff involved in tutoring services, writing services, academic skills instruction, and ELL programs. This includes hiring, onboarding, training, workload determination, delegation of responsibilities, coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluation. Foster collaboration with academic departments, student life, and other university units to create a cohesive network of support services. Lead efforts to develop and implement innovative programs and initiatives that contribute to student success, retention, and holistic development. Embed culturally sensitive approaches within the planning and implementation of student success initiatives. Proactively assess the effectiveness of student success services and implement continuous improvement strategies. Utilize technology and data-driven approaches to continually improve the effectiveness of student support services. Plan and facilitate student events, as well as lead outreach efforts to promote student success awareness within the university community. Stay abreast of educational trends and best practices, infusing forward-thinking strategies into student support services. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree. Five (5) years of supervisory work experience in student academic support within a university setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership in developing and enhancing student success initiatives within a higher education context. Strong management, supervisory and organizational leadership skills. Ability to train, manage, and motivate employees; to assign work and supervise performance. Proven dedication to creating a student-centric culture that prioritizes the well-being and success of all students. Ability to lead outreach efforts, connecting with the university community to raise awareness and promote the importance of student success. Experience in budget preparation and management, ensuring optimal resource allocation for student success programs. Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting. Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work. Proficiency in utilizing data and technology to inform decision-making and continuously improve the effectiveness of student support services.
Work Schedule
Work is performed during standard business hours and must be flexible to work during weeknights and occasional weekends. The primary location for this role is at the Stockton campus, with occasional travel to the Sacramento campus as needed.
