The Director for Inclusive Teaching Practices reports to the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) and provides proactive and responsive leadership, direction, and programming that advances the University of Denver's commitment to Inclusive Excellence and Inclusive Pedagogy. The Director for Inclusive Teaching Practices is charged with creating, implementing, and assessing strategic faculty development opportunities; online resources; and consultations for faculty members, academic administrators, academic departments, and allied offices.

Position Summary

This is a full-time (12 month) staff position with full benefits. The position will report to the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning who reports directly to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. The Director of Inclusive teaching will collaborate with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other allied offices to lead curricular and classroom-level efforts related to our values of creating an inclusive community of care.

The ability to prioritize and juggle multiple tasks in a dynamic environment while maintaining quality work products is crucial for success in this position.

Essential Functions

Proactive, Responsive and Reactive Faculty & Administration Support
Real-time, confidential teaching and learning support for faculty members; real-time consultative support to vice-provosts, deans, academic administrators and academic departments to advance DUs commitment to Inclusive Excellence and Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) efforts:

  • Provides comprehensive research-based faculty consultations to assess, design, and implement inclusive pedagogical practices across all disciplines of study and learning environments.
  • Creates and provides formative resources aligned with best practices in inclusive pedagogy to faculty and academic administrators following critical incidents in learning environments.
  • Supports faculty members in addressing critical aspects of course design, classroom management, and assessment of teaching and learning to best align with best practices in inclusive pedagogy.
  • Collaborates in real-time with academic leaders and partnering offices across campus to develop and/or update faculty supports around specific campus incidents that may arise, and for which there are no existing up-to-date resources.
  • Serves on and consult with search committees related to the advancement of Inclusive Excellence at DU.
  • Assist with OTL messaging, and consult as needed on institution-wide messaging, to respond to current events, involving Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Inclusive Teaching Faculty Development Programming
Collaborates with OTL colleagues and allied offices to develop, lead, facilitate and assess strategic Inclusive Teaching Practices programming to support the University of Denvers strategic commitment to Inclusive Excellence. Including but not limited to:

  • Faculty Learning Communities.
  • Teaching and Learning Series.
  • Workshop Series and Short-Courses.
  • Inclusive Teaching Practices sessions in broader OTL programming.
  • Identify and invite special speakers to lead master-classes on special topics.

Inclusive Teaching Digital Resources
Develop and curate research-based online resources to develop faculty members understanding and implementation of best practices in post-secondary inclusive pedagogy that provide strategies for addressing difficult issues that arise in classrooms including:

  • Supervision of Instructional Designer for Inclusive Teaching.
  • Lead content updates to the Inclusive Teaching Practices Website.
  • Lead content updates for the Faculty Institute for Inclusive Teaching (FIIT).
  • Maintain (with support of ID) online modules related but not limited to: Universal Design for Learning (UDL); Spiritual and Religious Diversity; Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity; Culturally Responsive Pedagogies; Culture, Race and Ethnicity; Inclusive Pedagogy; Native American Pedagogies; Intersectional Pedagogy; Community of Inquiry Model; Microaggression; Language in the Classroom.
  • Develop and deliver Inclusive Teaching Webinars.
  • Develop downloadable toolkits and other educational resources as needed.

National Trends and Best Practice

  • Stay abreast of national trends and best practices necessary to lead OTL efforts of Inclusive Teaching Practices by participating in national conferences and engaging in research necessary to share DUs achievements around IE with broader national community:
  • Contribute to scholarship and in-house publications in areas of expertise,
  • Stay abreast of trends in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in higher education, seek out professional development, and actively participate in relevant professional organizations.
  • Contribute to national dialogue and scholarship by participating in national conferences and engaging in research necessary to share DUs achievements with broader scholarly community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of best practices and scholarship in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI), particularly as it relates to classroom practices, course design, classroom engagement and management, and faculty/student interactions.
  • Familiarity with scholarship on inclusive pedagogy, high impact practices (HIPs), and faculty development.
  • Advanced facilitation and conflict management skills.
  • Possess advanced to expert interpersonal skills and ability to develop cross-campus relationships to promote effective and inclusive collaboration that is mindful of the population(s) being served.
  • Experience providing faculty development workshops, developing resources to support effective university teaching, leading faculty learning communities, and/or facilitating peer-mentoring groups.
  • Able to explain (in writing and verbally) application of inclusive teaching practices to the university classroom to non-specialists, as well as prepare reports for various audiences.
  • Able to manage multiple complex tasks without direct supervision.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, facilitation, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to maintain collaborative and confidential relationships.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated success with project management.
  • Experience teaching and/or developing curriculum.
  • Demonstrated commitment to building environments where indigenous, international, multilingual, LGBTQIA, students of color, and other minoritized students and faculty are valued, respected, and included
  • Demonstrated knowledge about faculty development challenges and assets specific to faculty from diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree.
  • At least 3 years of experience in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a member of a leadership team.
  • Experience supporting underrepresented populations in higher education.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Record of scholarly presentations and publications related to faculty development or inclusive teaching.

Work Schedule
Monday-Friday, 37.5 hours a week. Evenings and weekends as required to the nature of faculty development work.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 13.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $97,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
