Reporting to the Director for Student Belonging and inclusion, the Assistant Director of Student Belonging and Inclusion will strive to cultivate an inclusive campus experience that facilitates student engagement, social inclusion, intellectual curiosity, and personal exploration. The Assistant Director is responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive co-curricular student experience surrounding student belonging and inclusion. This individual will oversee the work-study team for the office including 10-12 student workers and will be responsible for their training and development..

The Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the mission, values, and goals of the Office for Student Belonging & Inclusion to support an inclusive, vibrant campus experience for all CCA students. We seek an energetic, visible, student-focused individual with a strong commitment to supporting our highly motivated, creative, and talented student body. This individual will model an atmosphere of respect, caring, collective engagement, inclusive excellence, accountability, and personal growth in a rigorous and vibrant student community. Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work within a globally and culturally diverse college community.

Through the intentional use of student development theory, cultural identity development theory, and leadership theory the Assistant Director will work to enhance a growing sense of community, inclusion, and belonging through the creation of activities and programs focused on personal growth. This position will ensure that student belonging and inclusion at the California College of the Arts is designed and nurtured through a lens of equity and inclusion attracting all CCA students' engagement in campus life.

The successful candidate will guide colleagues across campus and within the Division of Student Affairs to ensure that students develop and sustain a strong sense of belonging and inclusion, particularly BIPOC students, women, LGBTQ+ students, First-Generation Students, and other underrepresented populations.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Development, Leadership, & Management - 50%

  • Serves as a strategic thought partner with the Director, implementing the vision, mission, and goals of the office. Ultimately translating the mission into action within the student community through educational and developmental co-curricular structures.

  • Creates an inclusive and welcoming Multicultural Resource Center dedicated to BIPOC and other under-represented student groups, offering support and referrals for students desiring more connection within the CCA Community and larger Bay Area.

  • Partners with the Dean of Students Office, Student Life, International Student Affairs, & Residential Education to integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts across campus.

  • Chairs the Chimera Welcome Week Committee and directs all staff, faculty, and students responsible for workshops, programming, and events occurring during Welcome Week each semester.

  • Chairs the Heritage/History Month Celebration Task force, supporting and coordinating campus wide efforts to elevate and celebrate diversity of both the local and global community. 

  • Develops and organizes community response to incidents of hate or discrimination of marginalized groups (incident-specific programming) through the development of a bias incident response group.

  • Remains professionally current with knowledge and practice; affiliate with appropriate professional organizations; attend and present at regional and national professional conferences

  • Will monitor national trends in promoting the success of diverse students and help to educate the division and campus on the changing needs related to race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, LGBTQ+ students, and assess the impact of departmental programs as a result.

  • Maintains high visibility and engagement with the student body and campus community at College events.

  • Partners regularly with the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging on collaborative initiatives and projects that support the missions of each office.

  • Supervise, Recruit, select, and train a work-study team of 10-12 students, conduct regular meetings, provide guidance to students in their decision making processes. 

  • Engage in strategic and operational planning and manage financial resources to ensure maximum use of allocated budget for work-study and campus events and programs such as Welcome Week and theme months.. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Student Programming, Advocacy, & Belonging - 50%

  • Creates vision for Chimera Welcome Weeks and uses faculty, staff, and students to execute the vision through workshops, programs, and events.  
  • Exhibits an understanding of the current best practices in student affairs and an awareness of emerging issues in higher education, including social justice, cultural competency, retention and persistence, at-risk student factors, community building, and student learning.

  • Within supervision of the Global Ambassador program, strives to create positive relations between domestic and international students while providing a welcoming environment to CCA's large international population. Works closely with the International Student Services office to ensure international students are connected to staff that can support the students immigration status.

  • Works collaboratively with Campus Life and the residential student population to support students living in the residence halls year round including providing programs and support to the Pre-College Program.

  • Educates constituents (internal) on the value of an inclusive and engaged campus and offers classroom visits along with the Director to connect with faculty and their curricular approaches to working with the office.

  • Participates in development of cultural competency training efforts for Student Affairs staff, student leaders, student organization advisors and new students (specifically implicit bias and microaggressions).

  • Schedule dates and space, facilitate procurement of materials, contracts and internal permissions necessary for events. Oversee student planning, marketing, execution and evaluation of activities, and supervise events, as necessary.

  • Coordinate the planning, development, implementation, sustainability, and evaluation of college traditions related to DEIB, such as but not limited to, welcome week events and Heritage months. Chairs Heritage month planning committee.

  • Builds relationships with and supports students with marginalized identities by providing one-on-one support, assistance, and advocacy. 

  • Assists with identity based commencement ceremonies such as Multicultural Commencement and the Lavender Ceremony.

  • Create, design, and implement Cultural and Affinity Group-Based Programming: programming and opportunities for coalition building for key events throughout the academic year.

  • Create retention centered initiatives and programming: retention focused collegiate success and resiliency programming (including social adjustment to college, empowerment strategies, well-being, academic well-being and - skill development, graduate school preparation, campus and community connections, and academic belonging.

  • Serves as an Intake officer/investigator and advisor/person of support for the College regarding student complaints of unlawful harassment, discrimination, and sexual misconduct. 

  • Act as advisor to culturally or identity based student organizations as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Education, Student Affairs, Cultural Studies, Social Work, Event Planning, Counseling, Leadership, or another related field 

  • 2-5 years of prior experience in student affairs position(s), including experience working effectively with multicultural and underrepresented student populations, including racial minority students, in support of their academic and social success.

  • A commitment to a diverse community that fosters intercultural learning.

  • Demonstrated experience with the development, planning and implementation of events, workshops, and programs for a diverse and global community, an academic setting is strongly preferred.  

  • Comfortable  advising students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; 

  • Experience developing and assessing programs to produce effective student learning outcomes

  • Ability to balance collaborative and independent work.

  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, communication skills and presentation skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and ongoing responsibilities effectively while meeting deadlines in an interruption-rich environment required.

  • Ability to mediate conflict, problem-solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns.

  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential matters with sensitivity, discretion, and diplomacy required.

  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, initiative, patience, and collaboration are required.

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs and issues of students in the arts/design/architecture fields, particularly students entering college for the first time preferred.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours and evenings/weekends as needed.

  • Able to execute independent thought yet work collaboratively; strong problem-solving and facilitation skills; and possess computer skills (word processing and database management).

  • Employ exceptional interpersonal skills and exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion.

  • Proficiency in using Google Suite and strong general computer skills. 

Work Environment

  • Expect to work some evenings and weekends to engage students and CCA community in events that support the mission of the college.

  • Physical demands associated with this position include standing, walking, lifting & carrying heavy materials (up to 50 lbs), bending over, lifting and transporting by hand, bags, boxes, dollies to transport programming supplies from building to building.  Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and climb step stool ladders to hang items on walls.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • The compensation for this position is $34.31

  • CCA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including the choice of five medical plans, generous holiday, sick & vacation time, a retirement match and tuition remission. CCA covers an average of 91% of the medical plan cost for the employee only and an average of 82% for employees with dependents. POSITION DETAILS:

  • CCA considers a full-time work week to be 37.5 hours per week.

  • Work Mode: Hybrid

  • Schedule: Tuesday - Friday 10 - 6pm. This is a 33 hours/week position.

  • This position is covered under the staff union collective bargaining agreement and will be required to contribute to union dues/agency fees.
